An asteroid to strike the earth in near future?

Recently in the news, scientific speculation and in major motion pictures, the idea of a major space body hitting the earth in our future is deemed certain.

Depending on who is talking, this impact is either happening soon or far off in the future.

What do you think?

I have to agree that it is a certainty in the long run but how long is that? If we became subject to an asteroid shower of great magnitude for some reason then I think we could have it in our near future and I will add details of how that could happen.

If there is something headed this way, scientists will have known about it since they discovered it flying around, and they will probably find a way to blow it up before it blows US up. America has tons of nuclear missiles just lying there being really scary, they'll probably just put them on a rocket and blast the thing to shreds/in another direction, and the remaining particles will turn out to be a nice rain of shooting stars. How ironic: The doom of the planet becoming a very good reason for a romantic night out in the park

However, if something breaks off of Mars or some other planet/nearby rock, we'll probably be screwed, but what are the odds of it hitting us? We are just a small blue dot in an enormous universe, let's just hope we get lucky

You have a lot more faith in the knowledge and abilities of 'science' than I do.

Have to agree that local bodies are more of a problem for us than what is coming from outside. But I was referring to the idea of comet showers which are not uncommon to see but rarely come close to the earth.

There is also a lot of dark matter out there that can affect us and which we cannot see either.

I can't dispute the idea of Christ returning but I'm not sure how asteroids are related. I mean if asteroids hit the earth in the near future and they will, that has more to do with the universe/god than just Christ... although we would be even happier to see Christ in the aftermath I am sure.

How big is it?

I have strong reason to believe that from 3 to 4 asteroids of sufficient size will strike the earth in next 10 years or less.

I'm talking hundreds of feet across at least.

Roc, it 2 km and was originally supposed to miss us by 100 000 kms. Not now. Its a "global Killer" just google the AL2804 and read all the different gossip and reports and forums discussion about it. I will have to come and see you soon to give you more details about this. I wont be in a any trouble for "company policy violations". cat's out of the bag. Do you know about the Oort cloud at all that is waaaayyy out there and encompasses the entire solar system we live in?

There has been an increased amount of debris being introduced into the solar system from the Oort cloud in the past 7 years. There are 6 Vatican observatories around the world, the 3 well known ones (2 in the states, Mount Bram in Arizona for one), Antarica (where there is a formidable massing of scientific activity) and France. Kit Peak is funded by the Vatican as well. None of this is in dispute. The mossad also has some interest in what is going on.

I am going to look for visible signs of a problem by monitering not so much as to what is going on, but what isn't going on. The brookings protocol is very stringent about the methoda used to conceal global threats. Put it this way...
